Sharing God's Abundant Grace


Pastor: Rev. Jim Martin     

     As of July 1, 2019, Rev. Jim Martin is the pastor at Manatee UMC. He was born in Cleveland, OH, but raised in Miami, FL. He's been in the ministry for 51 years serving churches throughout the state and have held leadership responsibilities at the district, conference and jurisdictional levels. His B.A. is from Scarritt College, Nashville, TN and his M.Div. is from Candler School of Theology, Emory University, Atlanta, GA. His wife is Margaret Sever who is a true Floridian. Her family dates from the 1830’s here in Florida. They were married in 1965 at Allapattah Methodist Church, Miami. They have two daughters who live near by (Bradenton and Clearwater) and three grandchildren, who will soon be 11, 9 and 6 this year.

Assistant to the Pastor: Kathy Cooke   


     Kathy Cooke has served as Assistant to the Pastor for 14 years. She helps the pastor in whatever capacity is needed.


Interim Music Director: Janice Cox    

     Janice Cox is the Director of Music on a part-time basis. She has been the Director for one year, though she has filled in when needed numerous times before that. She directs the Worship Choir, Praise Team and established our Handchime Choir. 

     Janice is a graduate of the University of Maine where she studied psychology. She has been directing church choirs and community choral groups since the late 1950s in both Maine and Florida. Janice has participated in various workshops and courses over the years, including several national FUMMWA conferences. She has studied choral conducting during summer sessions at Westminster Choir College. Through the Board of Discipleship of the former Maine Annual Conference, Janice has teamed with others to create an annual workshop for Maine choir directors and choir members. She has twice been the conference director for the Maine Annual Conference choir. Janice is a former member of Veronica's Women's Theater, FUMMWA, ACDA, Chorister's Guild, and the Americna Guild of English Handbell Ringers.

Administrative Assistant: Barbara Huffman    

     Barbara Huffman has been the part time church administrative assistant at Manatee UMC for 15 years, previously full time at another church for 25 years. She has a background of secretarial work and graphics, having been part owner of a weekly newspaper in Michigan and of a real estate magazine here in Florida. She also currently works part time with a company that creates newsletters for numerous mobile home parks.

     Barbara and her husband live in Bradenton. She has three daughters who live in Bradenton, who all are grandmothers themselves. All but three of her 14 grandchildren also live in the Bradenton area.

     Music has always been a big part of Barbara’s life. She has been a church organist since the age of 14 and continues to fill that position at her church and other places as needed.


Preschool Director: Angela "Ange" Gilmore     

     Ange Gilmore is the director at Manatee United Methodist Preschool. She began working in education over 25 years ago. She attended Manatee Community College, receiving an AA Degree and later returned for her Director Credentials. Ange has worked at Manatee United Methodist Preschool for 19 years.  She was first hired as the four year old teacher, which eventually was renamed VPK teacher, somewhere along the way Assistant Director was added to her job responsibilities and then in 2008 she became the Director.

     “I love working with children, watching them grow and learn new things. And teaching me new things!! I have also enjoyed working with the families and staff helping them to succeed in life. I have brought many new programs and changes to MUM Preschool. It’s not just a job, it’s a calling!! I am so thankful that I have a job where I make a difference in other’s lives.”

     She has two beautiful daughters, Amy (who lives in Asheville, North Carolina), Brianna (who still lives at home) and a grandson, Merek (who lives in Asheville with his Mommy and Daddy).


Custodian: Hallie Crews    

Hallie Crews has been the custodian at Manatee for three years. She splits her time between the church and the preschool needs, including the lawn care.
